MUPS: Medically unexplained physical symptoms

Symptoms for which a treating doctor has found no medical cause. It is important that doctors accept they are real and take them seriously and rule out other conditions

MUPS are thought to be an expression of psychological illness through physical symptoms. ‘Somatisation’ is another term for them (‘soma’ means body)

They are thought to account for 30% of A&E attendances, 20% of prescriptions and 10% of total NHS expenditure for the working-age population. Patient that repeatedly return to A&E with MUPS are called frequent attenders
