How the Flu is Transmitted and Spreads - TrueCare

Flu (influenza) is a viral infection that causes fever, cough, sore throat, body aches and tiredness.

Many people ask: how long does flu last?

Most adults recover in 5 to 7 days, though a cough or fatigue can continue for up to two weeks.

  • Flu spreads easily. You can pass it on a day before symptoms start. You are usually most contagious in the first 3 to 4 days.
  • To recover, rest, drink plenty of fluids, and take simple pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.
  • See a GP or call NHS 111 if you have chest pain, trouble breathing , sudden dizziness, or if symptoms improve and then return worse.
  • Children, older adults, and people with long-term conditions may take longer to recover. They may need closer monitoring.
  • Stay home while unwell to protect others and stop flu spreading.
